CLAIM: Sen. Robin Padilla delivered the news that former president Duterte had died.
RATING: FALSE
A YouTube video posted by the channel “Viral TV” falsely claimed that Sen. Robin Padilla announced during a Senate hearing that former president Rodrigo Duterte had died in the Netherlands following his arrest.
The thumbnail of the video shows photos of Padilla crying and a patient lying on a hospital bed attended to by a health worker. The caption of the video stated, “ROBIN Padilla may MASAMANG BALITA sa LAGAY ngayon ni RODRIGO DUTERTE sa Netherlands (Robin Padilla has bad news about Rodrigo Duterte’s current situation in the Netherlands).” The overlay text at the bottom says, “Wala na si Tatay Digong… (Tatay Digong is gone).”
However, it was Sen. Christopher Lawrence Go, not Padilla, who delivered a manifestation about Duterte’s situation following the arrest at the public hearing of the Committee on Foreign Relations last April 10.
Go expressed concern over what he called “inhumane lapses” in the handling of Duterte’s medical needs.
He questioned Special Envoy on Transnational Crime Marcus Lacanilao during the hearing. Lacanilao confirmed that authorities took Duterte alone on a stretcher and did not allow his personal doctors to accompany him.
Go also said Duterte was unable to take his 27 prescribed medications. In addition, he said Duterte had high blood sugar before the flight and was scheduled for a medical checkup.
The photo used in the thumbnail, which supposedly shows Duterte in a hospital bed, is a Covid patient undergoing dialysis at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in 2021, taken by Reuters photojournalist Eloisa Lopez.
