FALSE

An old news card showing former senator Antonio Trillanes IV conceding in the 2022 national elections has resurfaced online and is being misrepresented as a recent development in this year’s elections where he is running as mayor of Caloocan city.

Facebook group Banat Pilipinas posted the false claim at 3:39 p.m. on election day with the caption:

Voting was still ongoing when the claim was posted.

The rehashed “breaking news” card was originally posted by the Inquirer.net on May 11, 2022, when then senatorial candidate Trillanes conceded two days after the national elections.

After his unsuccessful senatorial bid, Trillanes is running against incumbent Caloocan Mayor Dale “Along” Malapitan, who has been in office since 2022.

As of press time, Trillanes has not issued any statement regarding his concession in the mayoral race.

FactRakers is a Philippines-based fact-checking initiative of journalism majors at the University of the Philippines-Diliman working under the supervision of Associate Professor Yvonne T. Chua of the University of the Philippines’ Journalism Department. Associate Professor Ma. Diosa Labiste, also of the Journalism Department, serves as editorial consultant.

FactRakers' fact-checks also include those produced by Tinig ng Plaridel — the official student publication of the UP College of Media and Communication — and the UP Journalism Club.

The name of the initiative, coined from the words “fact” and “raker,” is inspired by the term “muckrakers,” first used in the early 1900s by American president Theodore Roosevelt to express his annoyance at progressive, reform-minded journalists at the time.
